UEFA CUP LAST 32: Werder Bremen-Milan
1st leg in Bremen on February 18/19, 2nd leg at San Siro on February 26 2009

Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
This is not the worst possible outcome. It will be no different to playing in the UEFA Champions League. I don't need to tell you about Milan, their players and their strength. There are some memories for me thinking about our matches with them in the 1980s and 90s [Schaaf came up against Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti when the two were players in the clubs' first meeting in 1989]. We shouldn't think too much about the last 16 as our full concentration has to be on these games.

The important precedent between Werder and Milan dates back to the quarter finals of the 1988/89 Champions League: 0-0 in Germany with a great performance by Carlo Ancelotti and 1-0 for the Rossoneri in the second leg at San Siro. Then the group phase of the Champions League 1992/93 edition: 2-1 for Milan at San Siro (including a goal by Maldini) and 1-1 in Bremen with the equalizer scored by Savicevic and great performance of Sebastiano Rossi. The current Werder coach is Thomas Schaaf
